Selina Rose Walker said she she accepted the award on behalf of all mums. Long-time friend Maree Alchin, who nominated Ms Walker for the award, said she was “one of those rather extraordinary people” who changed everybody around them for the better.”I just wanted her to have recognition for all her hard work … for her children, the community, her family, everybody,” she saidMs Alchin said Ms Walker’s children had flourished since they began living with her.”The heart that she has in everything she does, whether it’s looking after the children, working at the school … you see pouring out,” she said.Ms Walker has no biological children, but that hasn’t stopped her from embracing motherhood. When the parents of Selina Rose Walker’s three young godchildren were no longer able to care for them, she took a leap of faith, stepped up and became a fulltime mum.The boys, aged two, six and 10, are her cousin’s children.Becoming their mum was a huge commitment, but it was one the 36-year-old took in her stride. She now also opens her home, and her heart, to other at-risk Indigenous kids by providing much-needed respite care. For her efforts, Ms Walker was today named Barnardos ACT Mother of the Year.It puts her in the running for the title of Australian Mother of the Year, which will be announced at a Sydney ceremony in May.Ms Walker, a Ngunnawal woman who does welcome to country ceremonies in Canberra and is a proud Indigenous artist, said she accepted today’s honour on behalf of all mums.”I just took them on when they needed me, and now they’re part of my family,” she said.”Every mother deserves this … we all try our best”.Working to prevent Indigenous suicideAs well as looking after her three boys, Ms Walker coaches several sporting teams, volunteers at the school canteen, and is in the process of setting up a program to help prevent Indigenous suicide, following the deaths of two people close to her. She said a good mum was simply somebody who was there constantly, listened and just loved their kids.”So long as you’ve got love in the household, home is what you make it,” she said.”It’s not necessarily a big house or material items … it’s what’s inside that matters.”
