Six-month-old Lola Fletcher regularly visits residents with dementia at Feros Village in northern New South Wales. Morleen Templeman, 83, has had trouble communicating since being diagnosed with dementia and moving into the care of Feros Village in the northern New South Wales town of Bangalow.Care manager Jo Dwyer said Mrs Templeman had experienced a lot of frustration since losing her speech.”Morleen is troubled, and you can see that, but she can’t tell us why,” Ms Dwyer said.”One of the biggest ways she’s been affected is her speech, she’ll be out there muttering and muttering but nothing is clear, only very occasionally she might say ‘thank you’ or ‘pretty flower.'”But when carer Shelly Fletcher visited with her six-month-old daughter Lola, Mrs Templeman suddenly rediscovered her voice.”It blew my mind away, I watched when we welcomed Morleen into the village and her journey then was quite difficult and to see the woman she becomes around Lola … her transformation is incredible,” Ms Fletcher said.”When Morleen sees Lola her whole body just changes, she has this really maternal energy and you can just see her shoulders become upright, she starts putting her hands out like she wants to hold Lola, her speech becomes so much more improved, she starts to talk in sentences, she’ll say ‘beautiful baby’ or ‘where’s the nappy?'”And it is not just Mrs Templeman’s speech that returns. Ms Dwyer said memories could be triggered in a variety of ways, but for many mothers, nothing was better than a cuddle from a baby.”I think it’s that long-term memory that’s still there and that amazing maternal love she obviously had for her own children, then her grandchildren,” she said.”You’ll often hear ladies with dementia asking for their mum, but Morleen is the other way. Shelly Fletcher says baby Lola loves to visit residents, like Morleen Templeman, in aged care. Research is out there about the benefits to seniors, but I definitely underestimated the benefits Lola and I benefited from.”Lola sleeps so well post-visits.”For me, you can go through days just holding your baby and not actually being able to watch her, so coming to a village and handing her over to someone you trust and then sitting back with a cup of coffee and watching your baby is really special.” (ABC North Coast: Samantha Turnbull)
Ms Fletcher said it was not just the aged care residents that benefitted.”The best thing I love about coming to aged care is it’s non-judgmental, poo explosions are OK, there’s plenty of wipes and very talented staff to handle that, not like being in a cafe,” she said.”I did not expect the benefits that I was going to gain. Ms Fletcher said she remembers how to take care for a child.”Just naturally, without talking about it, we naturally both start caring for Lola and Morleen will start changing her nappy,” Ms Fletcher said.”She spotted that Lola had stuff behind her ears, so I reported that to her dad because he’s on bath duty.”I said ‘Morleen’s criticising your bathing ability.’ “Then in winter I didn’t put socks on and Morleen reminded me I should put socks on, so here I am with baby brain and Morleen living with dementia and the two of us get the job done.”

With no patterns, she had to create it from scratch.It took days of trial and error, using garage-floor foam, craft foam, glue, a Stanley knife, sandpaper and paint.But the results speak for themselves.”We went the sort of Roman-Greek armour for him and he really loves it,” Ms Simpson said.As for critics of a little boy liking a female character, Ms Simpson has a simple response.”He’s four, so if it’s not dangerous to him and he loves it, I’m not going to say don’t love that,” she said.”Plus it’s good for him to look up to women as well as men.”I think that’s a good thing and he loves her so why not.”If Jaxon wears this costume out, he knows grandma will not be far away to make him another one. Four-year-old Jaxon loves everything about Wonder Woman; the old television series, the new movie, the cartoons, the toys.His grandmother, prop-maker Angela Simpson, 50, said he was hooked.”I’m not sure what it is; he likes the old Wonder Woman, he’ll watch trailers on his iPad, he likes the music of Wonder Woman and he loves the new Wonder Woman,” she said.”I think it’s the sword and things.”But Jaxon could only buy costumes designed for girls and wore his until it was threadbare.”He would wear it constantly,” Ms Simpson said.”If it was in the washing machine his mum would have to get it out and dry it so he could put it back on.”He knew exactly who to turn to for help.Online Ms Simpson goes by the handle Nerfenstein and she has been making and modifying toys and costumes for years.So when Jaxon asked her to make him armour from the new movie, she eagerly took on the challenge. “You wear your life on your face, you wear your hardship, you wear your joy and that is really beautiful, fascinating and interesting.”As part of the shoot, the pair also asked women about ageing and how they felt about the notion of being invisible.”Some women were just adamant ‘no I’m not’,” Ms Peters said. ”To a certain extent in the society we live in, women [in that age group] are invisible,” Giselle Peters the co-founder of the Beautiful Boilers project said.”They disappear from the media and we worship youth and beauty.”

Mr Cuddy said the group he was part of volunteers out of love and support for the faithful in the bush, citing “the communion of saints”.”Saints are people who believe in Jesus as their personal saviour” he said.”There are saints here and there are saints in St James’ and there’s a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood with all those people.”The Turramurra resident said it was a privilege to help in Walgett.”We’re a bunch of wanderers and we’re not highly skilled but we learn and we have a bit of fun doing it,” Mr Cuddy laughed.Support as conditions worsenReverend Cayzer said it was not only his church and community that was being helped by those from the city.Some of the support his church receives is through unofficial links — such as the group from Turramurra — or via other organisations such as Bush Church Aid.Reverend Peter Adkins, NSW/ACT regional officer with Bush Church Aid said they had more than 100 ‘Nomads’ on their books who were travellers spending part of their holiday visiting communities in the bush, offering spiritual and practical support.He said help provided included food parcels and other items provided through donations from individuals and churches.”When conditions in the bush are tough — whether through drought, flood or bushfire — we find city folk generously respond to our appeals for help,” Reverend Adkins said. For many years, Stewart Cuddy has been a Sydney lawyer attending an Anglican parish in one of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs.But this week he is a labourer, on the end of a chainsaw or power drill, working with a church in remote the remote New South Wales town of Walgett.Mr Cuddy is part of a group of volunteers who head west every year on a grey nomad trip with a difference — to lend a hand to a much less resourced community.It is a connection that the local minister in the north-western community said was pretty important.”Country people can be a bit cynical about city people and I think this is proof in the pudding that people do care about us in the bush,” said Reverend Tory Cayzer, vicar of St Peter’s Walgett-Collarenebri.Spirit levels and spiritual supportThe group of eight men and women from St James’ in Turramurra self-fund their trips out west and take the tools needed to do odd jobs and address needs around the parish.On the current trip, they have demolished and replaced an unsafe shed in the vicar’s backyard and will also help at an outreach event on a property in the remote location of Cryon before holding a Christmas In July function at Collarenebri.The connection started five years ago after Reverend Cayzer asked other Anglican churches to help his parish, which was struggling through the drought.He said it is enormous encouraging to have both practical and spiritual help.”Often people in the country feel like people have forgotten about them,” Reverend Cayzer said.”Honestly, they think ‘has God forgotten about us?'”Last year, the rains came and the Walgett district saw one of its best seasons in history.However, now less than a year later, things have rapidly worsened with Reverend Cayzer saying the district was “still effectively in drought”.Many landholders and business people who re-stocked, repaired machinery and went into debt to plant crops are now facing dire farming and financial situations.Turramurra and Walgett: a comparisonAs well as the disparity in economic resources, the Turramurra and Walgett churches have different levels of people-power to draw upon.St James’ has several branches and approximately 700 people attend the church Mr Cuddy visits on Sundays.Comparatively, the Walgett-Collarenebri parish numbers about 18 regularly-attending adults and occasionally, others who live in more remote areas across the hundreds of square kilometres it serves.
