“I had to show that I wouldn’t just cut loose and hurt someone that is that little bit smaller than me.”Because mum does have that technical ability she got a couple of really good shots on and I had to really work hard to move and stay light on my feet to get away from her.”

Samuel, Damian, Megan and Caitlyn Pitts met ninth-degree black belts Richard Norton and Billy Manne. “I have never had it happen in my club, it’s certainly not common,” he said.”It has been extremely rewarding to see them not just grade, but do a good job.” we will get in and spar each other like these guys did and we’ll just beat the hell out of each other, but as soon as the round is over we’re back to being best mates.”It’s sometimes hard for families to not let that drag on in the car ride home, but [the Pitts] have learned to get over that and that has enabled them to do such a good job.”Megan said the high-ranking zen do kai member who graded her family, Tania Rowan, was conferring with other clubs to see if this was the first time in the style’s history a mother, father and son had completed second-degree black belt grading together. They’re all black-belt fighters rising through the ranks of zen do kai.The freestyle martial art phenomenon was developed in Melbourne in 1970 and borrows self-defence techniques from a number of popular fighting styles. If you’ve seen action star Chuck Norris or Australian martial arts guru Richard Norton on the big screen, you’ve probably seen zen do kai in action. Sam also admitted he was relieved his father wasn’t selected to spar him.”Dad and I have a very bad track record of hurting each other when we spar,” he said.Caitlyn was the only Pitts family member who didn’t have to fight a relative to pass her trial. She qualified for her first-degree black belt at a separate ceremony.Multi-generation grading unusualThe man responsible for the Pitts’ success is Kyl Reber, founder and lead instructor at Oxley’s Chikara Martial Arts.He understands better than most the challenges involved in training and fighting with friends and family. The seventh-degree black belt has two young daughters who train alongside him and is married to a fourth-degree black belt.”It’s awesome to see these full families come in together, go through it together and I think it only makes them stronger,” Mr Reber said. “It’s kind of hard to punch your child in the face, but then when he punches me in the face it makes it a whole lot easier,” she said.”He’s six-foot-two, 18, and, physically, much bigger and stronger than me.” Fourteen fighters attempted to earn their second black belt stripe, or dan, on the same day.Instead of fighting an unknown opponent, Megan found herself face to face with her husband immediately after sparring with her son. (Supplied: Tania Rowan)
Last month the Pitts participated in their end-of-year senjo — a special grading ceremony where fighters from all over the east coast of Australia have their skill level assessed.Megan, Damian and Samuel endured six months of gruelling physical training to prepare for their second-degree black belts.During the hour-long trial to achieve it, matriarch Megan realised she needed to fight her son and husband to get to the next level. “It’s a grading that’s really aimed at people in their 20s, so being 45, and a woman, I’m pretty damn proud of myself that I actually achieved it because it’s over an hour of really hard physical stuff.”

Sparring mum difficult test for sonSam said he was overwhelmed by emotions when he passed second degree grading with his parents by his side. The family took up zen do kai after Sam was bullied at primary school. (Supplied: Tania Rowan)
“I got [Damian] a few times,” she said.”I got a great one in his stomach with my foot and he smelled my gloves that day, so that was pretty cool.”Damian is a self-proclaimed advocate for women’s self defence. And while he enjoys seeing his wife and daughter get involved in zen do kai, Damian said sparring with them was a “double-edged sword”.The sparring round is the last of three physical challenges first-degree black belts must pass to move up.Megan said it’s nicknamed “the marathon” because fighters are expected to spar after displaying self-defence patterns, known as kata, and ghost fighting with training pads for almost an hour. “My best friend and I … Photo:
Samuel Pitts had to challenge his mum to qualify for his second-degree black belt. Mr Reber said it was very unusual to see two generations of the same family grade together. After six years of training with the family, the 18-year-old’s kicks sound like gun shots when they hit the pads.Sam’s greatest challenge now is exercising self-control against smaller opponents, like his mum.”You don’t ever want to hurt your mum so it was very hard for me to still have the intensity and the work rate I had through the entire grading but not to the point that it would hurt her,” he said.

Work-life balancePrior to making the leap into jewellery design, Ms Charlton extensively researched the commercial viability of her new venture.”Because I’ve got the business background I always look at it from the point of view of is this for me or is this something that somebody is actually going to buy?”Importantly, she said time management skills honed as a businesswoman allowed her to now successfully juggle the many facets of her family, study and part-time work life.”You have to be very organised, you have to make sure that people are aware of what you’re trying to achieve, you call in favours every now and then,” she said. “They’re very specific skills that are quite rare these days,” she said. Changing careers midlife: People share their success stories Many people have left the corporate world – or entered it to follow their passion. A mature-aged student, Ms Charlton has had to learn hands-on skills much different from the computer and paper-based roles she once performed.”It is technically difficult to get very small things to work properly,” she said.”If you’re doing tiny hinges or setting tiny sort of millimetre stones, it’s just hard to see.”

Photo:
Ms Charlton is two years into a three-year jewellery manufacturing course. Two years into a three-year TAFE course, Ms Charlton said she felt no regrets about leaving her job in marketing and advertising to try something new.”As soon as I got my hands on the tools and equipment and I made something, I went: ‘Right, this is where I should be.'”You can actually take a piece of metal and make it into something that is beautiful and wearable [compared with] my previous career [where] a lot of the things you do are quite intangible.”However, learning in a classroom surrounded by moving machinery, sharp tools and metallic filings meant Ms Charlton had to adjust her work attire to suit the more hazardous environment.”I definitely can’t wear high heels in here.”

The manufacturing skills are very different from those used in Ms Charlton’s previous career. Admit it. (ABC Radio Sydney: Luke Wong)
Overcoming new obstaclesMs Charlton is undertaking a jewellery manufacturing course at the TAFE NSW Design Centre’s Enmore campus.Although her study schedule demands only one day of classes per week, she has a one-hour commute from her home at Blaxland in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. “I would like to focus on those as specialties and work with other jewellers who actually need those skills incorporated into their pieces.”She encouraged other people who are considering a midlife career change to follow their passions while fulfilling their other commitments.”I would say to anybody who’s thinking those things are restrictions — no, you can do it, it’s possible.” You’ve caught yourself on more than one occasion sitting at your desk, daydreaming about a midlife career change.Rowena Charlton spent decades working in stable office jobs before she decided to cut a new career path in jewellery design and manufacturing. (ABC Radio Sydney: Luke Wong)
Polishing her craftMs Charlton has a clear mindset of where she would like to take her new career and is concentrating her efforts on perfecting her engraving and enamelling skills. “If you’ve got a customer who’s about to get married, you’ve got to finish that ring on time.”You can’t turn up a week later and go, ‘Well here it is’, because it’s all done and dusted.”

Tom Petty – You Wreck Me

Tonight we ride, right or wrong
Tonight we sail, on a radio song
Rescue me, should I go down
If I stay too long in trouble town
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
You break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes you do
Now and again I get the feeling
Well if I don’t win, I’m a gonna break even
Rescue me, should I go wrong
If I dig too deep, if I stay too long
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
You break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes you do
I’ll be the boy in the corduroy pants
You be the girl at the high school dance
Run with me wherever I go
And just play dumb, whatever you know
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
You break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes you do
you wreck me, baby
You break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes you do

Djani – Naopako Zivim

Ja sam primer svoga roda
samo Boga bojim se
kroz zidove idem glavom
majka ludog rodi me
Gde je gužva eto mene
nikada ne štedim se
nisam znao da sam s pravom
sad imam strah kako ću bez tebe
[Refren]
Naopako živim
kako da se smirim
propadam provereno
od tebe je overeno
Hoću da te vratim
greške mi naplati
živeću umereno
reci sve je oprošteno
Ja sam primer naše krvi
srce uvek vodi me
u nevolji idem prvi
otac ludog stvori me
Gde je gužva eto mene
nikada ne štedim se
nisam znao da sam s pravom
sad imam strah kako ću bez tebe

My Rainbow
空が明るくなったら スタートのしるし
笑顔 輝く 早く見せて My Rainbow
I believe I believe もうわかってる
雨がやんだら きっと 届くから
待ってる そう 待ってる 教えて My Rainbow

Grateful Dead – Casey Jones

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey Jones you better watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
This old engine makes it on time
Leaves Central Station ’bout a quarter to nine
Hits River Junction at seventeen two
At a quarter to ten you know it’s travelin’ again
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
Trouble ahead, Lady in red
Take my advice you’d be better off dead
Switchman’s sleeping, train hundred and two is
On the wrong track and headed for you
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better watch your speed
Trouble ahead trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
Drive your train, whoo
Trouble with you is the trouble with me
Got two good eyes but you still don’t see
Come round the bend, you know it’s the end
The fireman screams and the engine just gleams
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, you know, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind
And you know that notion just cross my mind

So intense, it drives me nuts
Makes me want to break it down now
Yeah

Feels so good, feels so good
It deserves an encore
Oh, ah
Oh, ah

Oh never let me go
Now it’s you that I believe in
‘Cause all this feelings never took me down

Breaking bread that’s my breakfast
Two bitches I’m so selfish
I wanna cut her off
Her head too good it got me helpless
Ya should feel embarrassed
I just touched down in Paris
My homie said he single but his side-bitches are married
Save some for the drama though
Guess I’m still the DJ

So I’m throwing cash and repay
Flush it on the freeway
Got cash [?] 3k
Countin’ cash for three days and all my pussy’s prepaid

Black girl who’s angry
Media can’t stand me
I may never get this Grammy
But I’mma feed my family! I know it must hurt
He fuck with me and he don’t want her! That’s why I should be the bridge for you bitches
That’ll help you to get over these niggas! It’s just me and my bitches
Swear I just love when it don’t have to be ’bout no niggas
I get to be in my feelings
Talkin’ that talk, I’m bout to walk in my thoughts, listen! Wuzzup with all you black women? I date a black man named Idris
You say "[I’m] ghetto, he trippin,"
You’d rather him with white women
How you don’t like me, no
When you just like me, oh! [Verse 2]
O-o-o-ohhhhh
Why couldn’t Sylvia sign me over B5
Why all these percocets got me feelin’ so alive
I don’t know why-y-y

She’s just a constant reminder
Niggas will sponsor vagina

No time, I’m too busy gettin’ it on my own! [Outro]
O-o-o-ohhhhh, oh
Wish I could be a Kardashian, so I could be black
Ooooh yeahhhh, oh… [Bridge]

And I ain’t gotta get you back
I let God handle you hoes
Said a prayer for you on the low

Don’t get caught up in facts ’cause ain’t shit real
And ain’t shit funny, so fuck how you feel! [Bridge]
‘Cause I don’t trust no one like that
And I ain’t gotta get you back
I let God handle you hoes
Said a prayer for you on the low

Wish I could be a Kardashian so I could be black
Put my face over Pac, wear my braids to the back
Throw a filter on that, ’cause ain’t shit real
And ain’t shit funny, so fuck how you feel! [Verse 1]

Meek Mill Request For Bail Denied By Judge

Reverend Al Sharpton and Colin Kaepernick have also thrown their support behind the #FreeMeekMill movemnet. He argued that Meek Mill is just the latest victim of a system notorious for oppressing people of color. The “Dreams & Nightmares” rapper got the bad news on Monday that his bail was denied by his probation judge Genece Brinkley, according to TMZ. She also suggest that his urine test may have been tainted because he may have flushed his system with “Fast Flush.” His attorney is once again furious with the judges ruling and vows to continue to fight for the rapper’s freedom. He has been getting a lot of support from the general public and fellow celebrities including his rival Drake and The Game, as well as, other celebrities closer to him like JAY-Z and Rick Ross. Last month, the Pennsylvania Superior Court rejected Meek Mill’s bail petition and ordered the presiding judge to make a formal ruling on his emergency bail request. He also spoke briefly about the Maybach Music Group rapper’s incarceration. JAY-Z penned an op-ed in the New York Times last month where he blast the justice system for its years of mass incarceration of young black men. His lead attorney, Joe Tacopina, says that the judge’s ruling “continues her long pattern of unfair treatment.” He also indicate the he will be appealing the judges decision not to grant his client bail. Meek Mill remains in prison after his emergency bail request was denied by a judge. Last weekend, Hov played Meek’s single “Dreams & Nighmares” at his “4:44 Tour” stop in Philadelphia. There has also been widespread condemnation for the judge who handed down the heavy-handed sentencing last month, but she is unmoved. Judge Brinkley argued in her legal docs that Meek Mill is a danger to the community and is a flight risk. Meek Mill, whose real name is Robert Williams, is currently serving 2-4 years in a state prison for probation violation.
