An unaccompanied pooch onboard a faulty Malaysia Airlines flight which was forced to make an emergency landing in Central Australia has made it home after a “ruff” 17,000 kilometre journey.Timothy the Maltese terrier was forced to spend a night in Alice Springs last week, along with the 224 passengers who were onboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH122 when one of its engines failed. The six-year-old rescue dog was travelling on his first-ever flight from Sydney via Kuala Lumpur to London, where his family was relocating.”My worst nightmare was that he’d just been left in a hold crate on the runway with no access to food or water,” said owner Susan Merrell, who was travelling with her family on a different airline.Instead, the Alice Springs community leapt into action, offering food and shelter for the night, and even a play date with a local dog.Pet Flyers owner Peter Melville, who organised Timothy’s journey, said it was not unusual for pets to fly unaccompanied on long-haul flights. “We often have to pick up pets from a different airport [due] to weather, but I can’t recall ever having to send anyone to the airport after an emergency landing,” he said.”When you hear the words ’emergency landing’ and you know you’ve got a pet on board, then it sends a bit of a chill down your spine.”

However, the saga was far from over for the globetrotting pup.Not only did he miss the connecting flight from Kuala Lumpur after arriving a day late, but his immigration paperwork was stuck on the original plane undergoing repairs in Alice Springs.”The whole plan was that he would arrive at Heathrow at 5:35am and that our flight would land at 11:30am,” Ms Merrell said.”We could have gone straight to the plane to pick him up, but of course things didn’t turn out that way.”After four days and more than 17,000km of travel, the dog was released from Heathrow Airport quarantine and reunited with his doting owner.”He was actually quite emotional, he was shaking, he was crying and yelping, but I think overall he was just really excited to see us and we were to see him too,” Ms Merrell said.

Sam Ranford and Deegan Dealtry have designed t-shirts that feature hard hats and steel-capped boots.
Two friends from Adelaide have launched their own t-shirt business to show others that working in the mining industry is cool. But it is not a start up by two adults — Deegan Dealtry and Sam Ranford are just 12 years old.

Starting the conversation about life in a mining family

(ABC News)
“My mum works in HR for a mining company and wears a hard hat and steel-capped boots, so that is where the idea has come from, and I am also working on a TNT design,” Deegan said. Sam said they wanted to do something that combined their talents, but also get the word out about what happened in the industry. Proud of boys’ willingness to connectDeegan’s mum Jacquie Dealtry said she had not been sure how the boys would go with getting the business started, but they had done a huge amount of work to get their designs out to the public.”They have certainly proved a few of us wrong and they have put in a great deal of effort and a lot of work. Deegan sold his drum kit to help with the funds,” she said.Ms Dealtry said getting the message out there and linking people who were working away helped when distance was an issue.”Most of us have kids and the kids don’t really understand what is going on with their mums and dads when they are working away, and what they are working on and who they are working with,” she said.”So for Deegan and Sam to come up with the idea of connecting mining-related images for the kids to be proud about what their parents are doing when they are away is great.”

Photo:

Sam’s mum Alicia Ranford runs the website Mining Family Matters, which provides support and education for people working and living the fly-in fly-out (FIFO) lifestyle. “I think anything that keeps parents connected with their kids is so important.”It can be something as simple as a drawing to stick on the donga wall when you are away, and I think the t-shirts are a continuation of that.” She said she felt like the work she had done had been passed on to her own family.”For me as a mum who has started a business supporting working families, the fact that one of my kids has recognised it is really vital to stay in touch with the parent that works away, I just think it is fantastic he has recognised that having that connection with your parent that works away is really important,” she said. Photo:

Alicia’s husband Joe has worked away on different mining projects since the kids were young, and Ms Ranford knows having a t-shirt is like having a small bit of home with him when he is away.”He just feels incredibly proud Sam wanted to do this, and he has taken his t-shirt away with him on his latest trip to Algeria and wears it proudly,” she said. Deegan goes by the name Pretty Boy and Sam’s nickname is Rooster, and from there the brand name Pretty Rooster was formed. Photo:

The boys come from mining families and have parents who spend time away from home working in the mining industry. “Deegan has always loved drawing and I thought we could put his drawings on to t-shirts,” he said.”I thought we could learn lots from that, but also teach people about what life is like as a mining family.”Some kids don’t really think what their parents do is cool if they are away for work, so we thought these t-shirts would be a good way to remember their parents when they are away.”And we have done adults and kids sizes so they can be matching.” Most of the designs are related to the mining industry, with drawings including a hard hat and steel-capped boots — parts of life the boys are used to.

Love of the land brings people togetherThe love of the land is something that still rings true in Corryong near the upper reaches of the Murray River in north-east Victoria.Doug Sheather and his brother owned a dairy farm until they were forced to sell up to the Snowy Mountains scheme in the 1950s.These days he lives in a bachelor’s shack in the bush where he still makes whips and catches up with long-time friend ‘Snags’ McKimmie.”Still riding. It’s a lot of fun.”I couldn’t live anywhere else.”Watch Back Roads on ABC TV 8pm MondayPast episodes or extras are on iView or at www.abc.net.au/backroads

#BackRoadsHeather Ewart returns to the Back Roads of Australia, to discover more resilient country towns and the inspiring people who live in them. She meets communities whose good humour and inventiveness will inspire and uplift. It used to be full of racks from the floor up to the bottom of the fluoro lights for all of the communications coming in,” Ms Bedson said. But with fewer staff on these days, she took advantage and made the most of the space.”I hang my laundry all in here so I don’t have to worry about it all blowing away.”

Bev Bedson looks after the Ceduna observatory in remote South Austrlalia for the University of Tasmania. “I just remember pulling out, finding this piece of dinosaur bone, [I was] in a filthy mood, and it just turned my life around,” Mr Elliot said.”I was in the best mood for the rest of the day.”Since the discovery by Mr Elliott, the museum has now opened a canyon to create an industry that has put Winton back on the map, and named a species of dinosaur, the Savannasaurus elliottorum, in his honour. Video: Alep Mydie has broken down barriers to bring greater multicultural attitudes to Katanning. I see people happy and they smile. With 42 nationalities in the town, it’s paved the way for a multicultural community including Zee Sultani, who came to Australia as a 10-year-old from Afghanistan.”I was extremely happy I guess that I’m able to go to school and I have the same rights as boys,” Ms Sultani said.”I could basically imagine being anything and I could achieve it in a country like Australian and I’m very grateful.”

Video: Doug Sheather and his mate 'Snags' McKimmie both share a love of the bush. (ABC News)
Community courage a multicultural affairIn true Australian spirit, courage can be seen in the town of Katanning, a three-hour drive south of Perth in sheep and cropping country.About 40 years ago, an influx of Muslim Malay Islanders arrived, including the parents of Alep Mydie — a local cafe owner and imam at the local mosque.Being the first to run an abattoir in a small town was not easy, but eventually the community came together.”Gradually we learnt the lingos, we learnt the language … how to be a part of the equation.”If I can make someone’s day, it’s rewarding for me. I take my grandkids, and he’s got some kids about and we take ’em up and show ’em the old tracks — show ’em how to catch a brumby,” Mr McKimmie said.”We’ve still got an old yard or two we know how to set. Living in isolated landscapes across Australia can showcase the best of the country’s character. While there more than half a million Australians living in remote or very remote areas, each town brings something unique with a lot of heart.Stories of resilience, unity, self-reliance and resurgence, and in some cases the rebirth of towns, can be found in remote parts of the nation, as the biggest and sometimes unheard-of achievements make a strong case for celebrating its true colours. And while isolation is a daily reality for so many communities in remote parts of Australia, even basic services can be hard to come by.Hairdressers Lyn Westbury and Fil Stewart drive from Innisfail across rural parts of Queensland to provide their services to towns setting up anywhere from fire stations, pubs to community halls. (ABC News)
Digging for inventive industriesBut like many towns in the bush, living through the drought, overcoming adversity and declining populations has led to creative thinking with inventions and tourism. The Central West Queensland town of Winton — home of Banjo Patterson’s song Waltzing Matilda — has reinvented itself with tourism.Winton Mayor Butch Lenton said he believed the town needed to diversify and look for new ideas to attract travellers.”I think we’ve got to look outside the square and at anything that can possibly turn it around to get people to live back out here again,” he said.Enticing the film industry to record the landscape has played a part in helping the town, but creating an industry around archaeology has led to science enthusiasts and tourists paying thousands of dollars in search of dinosaur bones at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. It all started 20 years ago when a local farmer, David Elliot, came across a bone after a rough day of work. (Back Roads: Ron Ekkel / Campbell Miler ACS)
“I just love the outback and I just love the people — they are just beautiful people,” Ms Westbury told ABC TV program Back Roads. “You stop and start — every little town has got its own little story.”Some of Australia’s most isolated towns are found on remote parts of the coast. The untouched coastline has meant that isolation in a town like Ceduna in South Australia, there are options to utilise the pristine environments from harvesting oysters to running one of the largest radio telescopes in Australia. It is often a starting point for travellers across the Nullarbor, more than an eight-hour drive north-west of Adelaide.Bev Bedson studies the sky and the stars as an observatory manager but said it was a far cry from its heyday in the 1970s.”It’s all empty. The old horse fell over with me a couple of times last week … I’ll probably catch one out of the bush,” Mr Sheather joked.Apart from cattle, the love of the bush is something they have in common.”The love of getting away up there, and doing some pretty adventurous sort of things, and being away from everything,” he said.Mustering cattle and catching brumbies are pastimes that Mr Sheather and Mr McKimmie share.”That’s our main thing now.

The Voidz – Leave It in My Dreams

I’m your friend,
Guess I’ve been taking a lot from you
Searching so long for the truth
You don’t think I would chase you with the door
As you already think it’s already too late
Searching for me in a combination of love
You overthink it, don’t overthink it
Join me way too early
I get up in the morning, and it just hurts
I think of all the little things that you and I can do
And I’ve been taking too many hits, oh
I’m breaking up with all that stuff
Anybody is worth some, that’s no good reason
I broke up with the sun
I’ve had enough now
Sure, fast times in the park
Don’t overthink it
Start awake so early
I get up in the morning, and it just hurts
I don’t wanna hear what I can’t mime
Anywhere with you could change my mind
Somebody’s taking much to long
Somebody’s taking much to long
Don’t call me stupid
Don’t call me stupid
[Solo]
It’s my life and I can’t delete it
Is that the life I lead? All these surreal things and sudden decisions
I just want to waste my time with you
I’ll leave it, ooh in my dream
I’ll never let it bother me
It’s not ym style
I know you want it,
I know you want it
Somebody’s taking much to long
Somebody’s taking much to long
Don’t call me stupid
Don’t call me stupid

Cause girl you party like you’re in Vegas
Now you’re on the dancefloor
Gimme more, gimme more, gimme more
Don’t stop, love the way you shake it
Give you my body, but you gotta give me yours
Good God, I think I really hit the jackpot
So get the camera for the snapshot
You just gotta let down your hair, down your hair. Girl, you’re scared of love
Let me do you right
Yeah, you need love
Let me do you right
You’ve been hurt before
Let me do you right
If you’re looking for love, girl
Let me do you right
(x4) Cause girl you party like you’re in Vegas
Yeah yeah yeah
You’re getting in free,
you didn’t even bring your ID
and you got work in the morning
But you don’t care, c’est la vie
Straight to the bar, order up a couple of drinks
Like a Cosmo with the mint like
and you got your friends here, your friends here
Girl, you’re scared of love
Let me do you right
Yeah, you need love
Let me do you right
You’ve been hurt before
Let me do you right
If you’re looking for love, girl
Let me do you right
(x2)
Girl, your loving is way too dangerous
Cause girl you party like you’re in Vegas
You want party favours
Are there any takers? Girl, you’re scared of love
Let me do you right
Yeah, you need love
Let me do you right
You’ve been hurt before
Let me do you right
If you’re looking for love, girl
Let me do you right

Girl, you can, you can be sure
That I’ll stay forever yours
Girl, you can, you can be sure
I’ll be forever yours. featuring Ebenezer

Frank Zappa – I Have Been In You

In you again, ah! In you again, ah! In you again-aah! In you again-aah! In you again-aah! Now I’m goin’ in you again baby
‘N’ you can go in me too, that’s true
I’m goin’ in you again, baby
‘N’ later when we get through
I’m going in you again-ahh! I have been in you baby
You have been in me
Aw’ little girl there ain’t no time
To wash your stinky hand
Go head ‘n’ roll over
I’m goin’ in you again
In you again
In you again
In you again…
I’m going in you again-ahhh
In you again, ah! In you again, ah! I have been in you, baby
And you have been in me
And we have be so intimately entwined
And it sure was fine
I have been in you, baby
And you have been in me
And so you see we have be so together
I thought that we would never
Return from Forever
(Return from Forever)
(Return from Forever)
You have been in me
And understandably
I have been in ‘n’ outta you (in ‘n’ outta you, in ‘n’ outta you)
And everywhere, you want me to (in ‘n’ outta yoooou)
Yes you know it’s true;
And while (I was inside)
I might have been (undignified)
And that is maybe (why you cried)
I don’t know, Maybe so
But what’s the difference now? In you again, ah! In you again-aah! In you again, ah!

Natalie Imbruglia – Left Of The Middle

End of the third round
As I put the phone down
Chasing the same lines
Over the old ground
I’m pushing zero
Where is my hero? He’s out there somewhere
Left of the middle
And your world falls down
And you’re there calling out
But it’s something I can’t say
Though it seems the only way
But it’s a game that I can’t play
Not today
I got my ticket
And I got a straight road
But I’m passing the same signs
Over and over
And my world falls down
And I’m there calling out
But it’s something I can’t say
Though it’s seems the only way
But it’s a game that I can’t play
Not today
And my world falls down
And you’re there calling out
But it’s something I can’t say
Though it’s seems the only way
But it’s a game that I can’t play
Not today
I need to tell you
Trying to get through
It’s not always easy
Left of the middle

Cam O’bi – TenderHeaded (feat. Smino)

Yanked straight from my naps, dead on my comb
When my cradle hit the flo’
Tender head, my genes on swole
Yea, yea, yea, yeaaaaaaah
[Verse 2: Smino]
I don’t wanna sing the Star-Spangled Banner
Unless it’s produced by David Banner
Elbows on the lunch table, eatin’ on a gravy sammich
Lil’ nigga, no table manners
Crazy it attracted shawty’s
On the back of the bus gettin’ neck had a knack for noggin’
Lil’ nick at nighttime
Googlin’ booty, beauty illusions polluted and deep-rooted in my mind
My block was a Rubix
Anywhere you turned, the shit was hot around the clock
And they could not ice cube it, damn
Mama, I don’t like this school shit
Fuck an alogarithm, I’ll log into the music, damn
Daddy, I don’t like this school shit
I beat the desk until my knuckles bleed
All my teachers think I’m challenged mentally
But my mental skrong, know who I wanna be
Instantly began a surgery
Bada-bing, Voila!, made wings wit the words, Hallelujah, Yah bitch, Yah! How come I can’t say what fuck I want say? How come, how come? Tryna get this skraight, no damn hot comb through
How come, how come? The damn barber just started laughin’
I cried as he gave me that bald fade
Afro puffs hit the flo’, symbolic of sheddin’ my innocence
I guess I thought they were magicians or alchemists or mathematicians
With algebraic, calculus algorithms designed to cure me of my nappiness
Like a perm burned off my happiness, I sat silently acquiescent, pitfalls of adolescence
Spitballs and scrabble sessions and tattle-tales
Playing around in the hallway like one of Santa’s elves
"You wanna goto jail?", "Hell naw, mister security!"
Got sent to the principal for my potty mouth
Talkin’ bout some, "give me your number so we can call the house"
But gimme got shot, so the ink stainin’ my record now
You pull a comb thru my afro that shit’ll crackle like a bowl full of Rice Krispies
Rollin’ my innocence in a cigarillo like

[Chorus]
How come I can’t do what fuck I want do? How come I can’t say what fuck I want say? Tender braids, but I can’t make my eyes rain
How come, how come? How come, how come? How come, how come? All my blessings came when I accepted I’m not y’all
I been put it down the line like laundry
They told find something more concrete
Now a lil’ nigga breakin’ concrete
Praises to God I ain’t no convict
They’ll never take away my confidence

[Chorus]
How come I can’t do what fuck I want do? Yanked straight from my naps, dead on my comb
When my cradle hit the flo’
Tender head, my genes on swole
Yea, yea, yea, yeaaaaaaah [Chorus]
How come I can’t do what fuck I want do? Weavin’ through the naps, dreams been on hold
Since my cradle hit the flo
Tender head, my denim skrong
How come, how come? Tryna get this skraight, no damn hot comb through
How come, how come? Weavin’ through the naps, dreams been on hold
Since my cradle hit the flo
Tender head, my denim skrong
Yea, yea, yea, yeaaaaaah
[Verse 1: Cam O’bi]
Remember when I was a kiddo, growin’ up in the middle
Windows lining my smile, silver teeth underneath my pillow
A nigga had a nappy head like a Brillo pad
Sister said I need to do somethin’ about them beedy-beed naps
Snackin’ on Andy Capp’s with a pickle and a quarter water
Walked in the barbershop asked me what I wanted
I told that man I wanted to look like Superman
But when he had the long hair
You know, kinda like Michael Jackson? Tryna get this skraight, no damn hot comb through
How come, how come? Tender braids, but I can’t make my eyes rain
How come, how come? How come, how come? How come, how come? Weavin’ through the naps, dreams been on hold
Since my cradle hit the flo
Tender head, my denim skrong
How come, how come?

Leven Kali – Do U Wrong (feat. Syd)

[Outro: Leven Kali]
Baby won’t you let me ride? Tell me what you want, I’m tired of the baitin’
[Pre-Chorus: Syd]
I can do you wrong if you want, babe
Would it keep me on your mind long enough, babe? [Chorus: Syd]
Baby won’t you let me ride? I can do you wrong if you want, babe

[Chorus: Syd & Leven Kali]
Baby won’t you let me ride? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you, girl
[Verse 2: Leven Kali]
Oh you can be the one, you can be the only
If you wanna be my girl or just the homie
I can give you love, I can play it cool for you
I can pick you up or send a pool for you
If I use my tongue, baby would you like that? Do I play cool? I can do you wrong if you want, babe

[Chorus: Leven Kali & Syd]
Baby won’t you let me ride? Do I text twice? Do I play cool? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you, girl Should I be nice, should I be rude? Do I text twice? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you so
Baby won’t you let me ride? Should I be nice, should I be rude? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you, girl
[Verse 1: Syd]
You could be the one, you could be my favorite
We could be in love if we keep datin’
Baby, I could beat it up, I can catch the fade with it
Take the mask off, I can put my face in it
You ain’t gotta trip, we can vacation
Take you all around the world and give you paper planes
If I only hit it once, it would be a shame, wouldn’t it? If you wanna bite, baby girl, I bite back
I can show you somethin’, this could be a lesson
So tell me what you want, I’m tired of the guessin’, babe
[Pre-Chorus: Leven Kali]
I can do you wrong if you want, babe
Would it keep me on your mind long enough, baby? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you so
Baby won’t you let me ride? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you, girl
[Bridge: Leven Kali & Syd]
Oh, I really want you, girl
Oh, what I want, yeah
I can’t read your mind, I can’t read your mind
I can’t read your mind, I, I can’t read your mind
I can’t read your mind, I can’t read your mind
I can’t read your mind, I, I can’t read your mind
Baby won’t you let me ride? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to
Baby won’t you let me ride? Tell me what you like
I can’t read your mind
Bad as I want to, I really want you so
Baby won’t you let me ride?

One Week Notice – Get It N Go

[Chorus: Reezy]
Hey, I pull up and get it n go
And all of my hitters will go and all of my bitches will go
The minute I hit I go, I pull up and get it n go
I hit a lick and I go, all of my bitches’ll go
The minute I get it ill go, I pull up and get it n go
Pull up and get it n go, pull up and get it n go
I pull up and get it n go, I pull up and get it n go
[Verse 1: Jarren Benton]
Pull up I get it go to get my money movin’ slow
Had to cut em off, some niggas had to go
I went back and dough, a nigga had to grow
Before the status quo, I’m not your average Joe
Dranked up, dripped out, stack doughs, fuck hoes
Bitch bounce, hoes give me discount
Gucci down, pimped out, work hard, get clout
[Verse 2: Price]:
16 got kicked out, flippin’ dimes and nicks now
I remember when they shot up Anthony at Nick house, whole family tripped out
It’s like Drake and Alicia Keys whenever Price pull his wrist out, fireworks trip down
She fucked the worth at the work and I tell her to strip down, call her Lyft now
Killing 2 hoes who get too close, please don’t be callin’ me bro
I’m movin’ legit gettin’ dough, no you not hittin’ my smoke
I just get lifted after shows, don’t gotta hit licks no more
But won’t let you take nothin’ from me, don’t let your ass owe me some money

[Chorus: Reezy]
Hey, I pull up and get it n go
And all of my hitters will go and all of my bitches will go
The minute I hit I go, I pull up and get it n go
I hit a lick and I go, all of my bitches’ll go
The minute I get it ill go, I pull up and get it n go
Pull up and get it n go, pull up and get it n go
I pull up and get it n go, I pull up and get it n go
[Verse 3: Demrick]
Matte black range rover tinted out, racks hidden in the house
Bad bitch, turn her round, bend her down, baby yeah work it out
Young wild and reckless, diamond Henny bottle necklace
No lames in my section, smoke or not ain’t a question, yeah
[Verse 4: Dizzy Wright]
Switch back, hit this, I told lil mama stop flexin’
Chit chat, fuck that, I told her bring that ass in my direction
I gotta get my point across, is you with it or you not? Wordsmith, twist up, I pull up and get it n go, I gotta get it now
What it mean I’m boutta be the boss
Be about your business, never let them play you out
Hit the city, hit the stage, shirt tucked in, black Bruce Lee style
And I’m blowin’ clouds, tellin’ Price like, they don’t know the tribulations and trials
They don’t know the situation, they don’t know what we go thru when ain’t nobody else ’round

[Chorus: Reezy]
Hey, I pull up and get it n go
And all of my hitters will go and all of my bitches will go
The minute I hit I go, I pull up and get it n go
I hit a lick and I go, all of my bitches’ll go
The minute I get it ill go, I pull up and get it n go
Pull up and get it n go, pull up and get it n go
I pull up and get it n go, I pull up and get it n go
[Verse 6: Emilio Rojas]
I’m sittin’ in the middle of the city with the cash
I’ma hit a hundred fifty on the dash
All the women that are with me and they bad
When I get ’em in the pad then I hit it they gonna splash
I did it to be livin’ in a tenement so when we get the money we just set it in the stash
Yeah, we get it and we never gonna be settlin’ for less
If you meddle, then you know we gonna clash
Shorty worried about a fat transfer, I’m just worried about a bank transfer
No ID call my phone but that’s the type of call that I can’t answer
Runnin’ ’round I’m in uptown, I’m with a bunch of kings that speak bad Spanish
Comin’ around to my block and you got no pass, nigga taxed after like
[Chorus: Reezy]
Hey, I pull up and get it n go
And all of my hitters will go and all of my bitches will go
The minute I hit I go, I pull up and get it n go
I hit a lick and I go, all of my bitches’ll go
The minute I get it ill go, I pull up and get it n go
Pull up and get it n go, pull up and get it n go
I pull up and get it n go, I pull up and get it n go
