The football program kicking goals for young migrants in Melbourne

Migrating to Australia in 2012 was the “best thing” to ever happen to Albert Mambo. But the 25-year-old admits that for a while there he thought he’d made a mistake.”There were times I wanted to be back in welcoming Uganda,” he said.He and his mother established themselves in Eumemmerring, about 40 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, and Albert said he spent most of his first year Down Under watching television in his bedroom.”People think once you move to Australia all your problems are over, but you are starting again from the bottom,” he said.”Yes, it is a great country, but it is not easy making new friends and starting at a new school.”His experiences prompted him to start I Speak Football three years ago.The program uses weekly soccer training sessions as a vehicle to help migrant kids build friendships and develop social skills. Now more than 400 boys and girls from migrant backgrounds are packing out fields across Melbourne, and Albert’s thoughts of moving back to Uganda are all but a distant memory. It’s not just about footballI Speak Football is a joint initiative between the Centre for Multicultural Youth, Global Cityzens and Melbourne City Football Club (MCFC).The program tackles the problem of social isolation while teaching football and English language skills. The weekly training sessions are run by youth leaders, many of whom come from migrant backgrounds themselves.Sue Crow, MCFC’s head of community, said the program had grown exponentially in 2018.There are now six sessions run across Melbourne, including at Fitzroy, Collingwood and Tarneit, with a good mix of boys and girls attending. (ABC Radio Melbourne: Tynan King)
She said most of the kids came from nearby housing commission areas and were aged between five and 17 years.”They’re often very nervous at first, but by the end of it they’re saying, ‘I can’t wait until next week’.”Creating a level playing fieldHelen Kapalos, chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, said sport was an effective way to foster social inclusion.”No matter where you have come from you can make a connection with someone else over sport.”She said this applied to connecting migrant communities to the wider Australian community.”Programs often focus on introducing migrants to other migrants, which is great, but what we really need is for all Australians to come together.”That’s where sport comes in; it cuts across all society. Everyone is equal on the sporting field.”From student to coachWilson Poni, 19, attended I Speak Football sessions and now coaches at Fitzroy and Collingwood.Like Albert, he had trouble making friends when he arrived in Melbourne from South Sudan in 2003. He said the program introduced him to hundreds of people and helped him embrace life in his new country.”I loved it and these kids love it now,” he said.”I now hope to pass on my knowledge to other people.”I want them to learn to engage with other kids, to make friends and to not be afraid.”

Reef sharks rebound after illegal fishing crackdown

Key pointsSharks return to Ashmore Reef, 350km off the Kimberley coast in northern WAScientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science embarked on a research project at the reef in 2004Border Force deployed patrol boats near Ashmore Reef to enforce a total fishing ban in 2008According to Maritime Border Command, 260 vessels were detected between about 2004 to 2007Last financial year, 15 vessels were detected in Australian waters, of which three were in Western Australia
Ashmore Reef, an atoll 350 kilometres off the Kimberley coast near Australia’s border with Indonesia, is home to an array of marine life.It is also a target for illegal fishermen from South-East Asia. The most recent was an illegal fishing vessel intercepted off the Kimberley coast in February.”The current incursion [rate] is very low because of the compliance activity and our presence throughout the region,” Commander Laver said.Species never seen on reef before are documented

It reduces biodiversity, meaning that fish stocks become unsustainable over time,” he said.In 2008, as part of an increased effort to reduce the hundreds of boats coming into Australian waters, Border Force deployed patrol boats permanently in the vicinity of Ashmore Reef to enforce a total fishing ban. (Supplied: Glabal FinPrint Project)
After returning to Ashmore Reef in 2016, Dr Speed said the impact had been huge.”Over the last eight years we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of sharks,” he said.”In fact, I think we’ve seen four-and-a-half times as many sharks as we did back in 2008, and it most likely has been due to this reduction in illegal fishing.”Scientists documented species they had never seen before including nurse sharks, leopard sharks, rays and wedge fish.Dr Speed said the rigorous approach to illegal fishing at Ashmore Reef could help guide management practices at reef systems around the world.”This is one of the few stories that we know of where shark populations have increased through the protection of the marine protected area,” he said.”It’s a fantastic positive story. High on their hit list are sharks whose fins and flesh are highly valued in many Asian countries. In 2004, concerned by a spike in foreign vessel incursions into Australia’s northern waters, scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science embarked on a research project at the reef.Marine ecologist Conrad Speed and his colleagues, working in collaboration with the Global FinPrint Project, set up a series of underwater cameras to capture fish stocks.”There was some concern that the number of fishing vessels were increasing in the area, so to get an understanding of what the fish and shark stocks look like in the area, we started using baited cameras to get an initial assessment,” Dr Speed said.Illegal fishing a threat to biodiversityWhat they saw was concerning, with many sharks normally found at healthy reefs absent.Australian Border Force wase also worried about the increase in illegal vessels to the region. Commander, Maritime Border Command Peter Laver is in charge of protecting Australia’s maritime borders, and believes illegal fishing is a significant threat to Australia’s biodiversity.”Illegal fishing creates unsustainable pressure on our marine environment. Sharks driven away by illegal fishermen from a remote reef off Western Australia’s northern coast have started to return, thanks to a crackdown by Border Force officers.Scientists, who say the animals are essential to the health of coral reefs, believe this is a globally significant lesson in preserving fragile ecosystems. It’s a win for management and a win for conservation.” Photo:

The never-say-die town ‘on steroids with generosity’

Ms Stewart said the flood response was community driven. My dream has been to help kids through horses and (It Takes a Town) gave me the confidence to do that,” she said.A circle of givingRoss Beames is another who received with one hand and gave with the other. The 17-year-old was struggling to cope after the flood, unable to find a place to live and was on the brink of leaving his TAFE course.”I went and spoke with the TAFE guidance counsellor and she put me in touch with It Takes a Town,” the teenager said. Nestled in the shadow of Mount Wollumbin in northern New South Wales is a town that refuses to let itself be defined by disaster. When the flood that resulted from last year’s Cyclone Debbie swept through, the community of Murwillumbah didn’t wait for the wheels of government bureaucracy to act.It took the flood response into its own hands. What makes it different from other nature disaster assistance efforts is that a year on from the devastating flood, the energy of generosity grows and thrives.Resident Carmen Stewart saw the heartfelt reactions and helped harness it. “Constantly we’re expecting governments and services to fix things for us,” Ms Stewart said.”I’m interested in what happens when a community is engaged first, then bringing government and services in as a partner, not as the leaders.”

“Here was a community that was on steroids with generosity, there were just offerings all over the place,” Ms Stewart said. The postcode 2484 is thriving thanks to a little project that’s brought a big community together.’It Takes a Town’ was born from the saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’.Organiser Ms Stewart said the project, to help foster healthy and happy children in their town, was underway before the flood happened — coincidentally to be launched on the day the flood occurred. It Takes a Town immediately morphed into a flood recovery response but continued the focus on the welfare of children. The sound of running water, even the sound of a toilet flushing, would send the youngest into severe anxiety.Horses used to help healEnter ‘horse therapy’ — helping the girls and many others left emotionally damaged by the flood.Horse trainer Bianca Mercuri wanted to help and donated time with her nine rescued horses, in an effort to help children heal.It worked.A 10-week program taught the children basic horse management skills, but also a great deal more. Photo:

“We talk about the horses, not about the floods, and because each horse has such a good rescue story, like they’ve come from something bad and now it’s really good, the kids could connect with that,” Ms Mercuri said. She said the circle of support became wider than just free horse time.”It Takes a Town basically gave me the building block to start my dream. (Supplied: Chelle Wallace )
The project links those with a need, with those who can help, first creating ripples, then large circles of generosity. It Takes a Town has created a database of 800 helpers from a community hit hard by the disaster.Help was offered to anyone that needed it — like the family who lost everything with two little girls in trauma from the experience. Homelessness was a big issue after the flood with the town’s caravan park destroyed and many houses classified as a health risk.”Finding a place to live was difficult and It Takes a Town, helped me to pay for some driving lessons and helped me find a place to live.”Now in a stable home, he is continuing his studies and is helping others in the community by offering free computer-skills sessions.”I think it’s great that people are able to do a circle of help and share their experiences and knowledge as a community,” he said.Ms Stewart believes the flood helped the community to create its own future.”It’s almost as though It Takes a Town has given the community permission to act on its own behalf and to not assume that the government or council will do it first.”

Sam Smith – Pray Remix lyrics

[Verse 1: Logic]
They never knew my struggle
Rose above the rubble
Rather live inside they bubble then go through the trouble of havin’ they double double vision correct it
They just neglect it and–
I been thinking lately
Will the Devil take me? So when it comes to passin’ judgements I don’t think that you’re the one to make the call
Heaven want to cast me out for being me, I know there’s others like me that’ll break the fall
I know you hater motherf*ckers just can’t relate at all
If I’m the first one to the line that’s fine, I’ll take it all
Well Logic, He gon’ let ’em know
I ain’t perfect, but I’m worth it
I’m alive, I deserve it
I been praying, I ain’t playin’
I don’t think you hear the words that I’m sayin’
I don’t think you know the weight on my shoulders
That gets heavier as I get older
Callin’ anybody, callin’ anybody
“Can you hear me?”
I pray that you hear me
I pray that you hear me
[Chorus: Sam Smith]
Maybe I’ll pray (Lord), pray (Lord), maybe I’ll pray
I’ve never believed in you, no, but I’m gonna…
[Bridge: Sam Smith]
Won’t you call me? or will God protect me? I know I ain’t perfect, but you should respect me
They don’t want me happy
They don’t want to let me live
[Verse 2: Sam Smith]
I’m young and I’m foolish, I made bad decisions
I block out the news, turn my back on religion
Don’t have no degree, I’m somewhat naïve
I’ve made it this far on my own
But lately, that sh*t ain’t been gettin’ me higher
I lift up my head and the world is on fire
There’s dread in my heart and fear in my bones
And I just don’t know what to say
[Chorus: Sam Smith]
Maybe I’ll pray, pray
Maybe I’ll pray
I have never believed in you, no
But I’m gonna pray
[Verse 3: Logic]
I am me
I’m a man, I’m a sinner
But understand, aren’t we all? Let’s talk about freedom
Everyone prays in the end
Everyone prays in the end
[Outro: Sam Smith]
Oh, I’m gonna pray, I’m gonna pray, I’m gonna pray
Pray for a glimmer of hope
Maybe I’ll pray, pray, maybe I’ll pray
I’ve never believed in you, no, but I’m gonna pray Let’s talk about freedom
Everyone prays in the end
Everyone prays in the end
Oh, won’t you call me? Can we have a one-on-one, please? Can we have a one-on-one, please?

Lauv – Chasing Fire lyrics

[Verse 1]
I wanna hate you ’cause I still love you
And it’s weighing on my chest
We keep our bodies tied together
To ignore what’s coming next
[Pre-Chorus 1]
I was driving you home in the middle of the night
But I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye
I was driving you home in the middle of the night
And there’s no good way, yeah there’s no good way
[Chorus]
I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you, you
You got that something that I never wanna lose, lose, yeah
It’s like dancing when the song’s already over
Moving without getting any closer, oh
I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you
[Verse 2]
I wanna feel you, really feel you
Not just hold you close at night
We keep our bodies tied together
To ignore what’s on our minds
[Pre-Chorus 1]
I was driving you home in the middle of the night
But I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye
I was driving you home in the middle of the night
And there’s no good way, yeah there’s no good way
[Chorus]
I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you, you
You got that something that I never wanna lose, lose, yeah
It’s like dancing when the song’s already over
Moving without getting any closer, oh
I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you
[Post-Chorus]
Keep chasing fire
No other way, no other way
Keep chasing fire
No other way, no other way
[Pre-Chorus 2]
I was driving you home in the middle of the night
But I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye
I was driving you home
Even if I go, even if I stay

Get down town with the light of day

I’ve been looking far and wide
Running from the fear inside
Just close your eyes and drive

Get your head I’m calling out, I [?]
Faint light flickering in the distance
New world thickening
[Chorus]
And we will find our way [?]
Just like they do on the TV
Baby, we’ll go [?]
It’s incredible
Just like they do on the TV

I’m older now but I feel my time start to begin
Out on the road they all advertise it, I’m not buying it

X Ambassadors – Don’t Stay lyrics

[Verse 1]
Lately I’ve been thinking
You’ve seen the worst and you’ve seen it in me
I gave you every reason
Every reason to get up and leave
[Pre-Chorus]
I know that there’s times
That you get so tired
And you know I want you to stay

But don’t stay for me
Don’t stay for me
If you got to leave
Do what you need
But don’t stay for me
Don’t stay for me

Baby, I’ve been thinking
That you’ve been hurt and it’s because of me
Oh woah, oh woah
Baby, my ship is sinking
So don’t go overboard trying to save me

I know that there’s times
That you get so tired
And you know I want you to stay
[Chorus]
But don’t stay for me
Don’t stay for me
If you got to leave
Do what you need
But don’t stay for me
Don’t stay for me

The Weeknd – Privilege lyrics

[Verse]
Enjoy your privileged life
‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night
We said our last goodbyes
So, let’s just try to end it with a smile

And I don’t wanna hear that you are suffering
You are suffering no more
‘Cause I held you down when you were suffering
You were suffering
[Chorus]
Blues away, way, way
I got two red pills to take the blues away
Blues away, way, way
I got two red pills to take the blues away
[Bridge]
And I’ma f*ck the pain away, and I know I’ll be okay
They said our love is just a game, I don’t care what they say
But I’ma drink the pain away, I’ll be back to my old ways
And I got two red pills to take the blues away, oh
[Outro]
I don’t wanna hear that no more, no more
No more, no more
I don’t wanna hear that no more

Charlotte Lawrence – Psychopath lyrics

[Verse 2: Nina Nesbitt, Charlotte Lawrence & Sasha Sloan]

So you’re gonna lie to me, f*ck you (f*ck you)
Try to fake cry to me, that’s cool (that’s cool)

The Weeknd – I Was Never There lyrics

Don’t you know? (Cry, cry, cry, cry)
What makes him wanna take his life? [Verse 1]
What makes a grown man wanna cry? Ooh, no (Yeah)
His happiness is never real
(Real, real, real, real)
And mindless sex is how he feels, ooh, he feels
[Chorus]
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter (it don’t matter)
It won’t matter (matter)
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time (time, it’s time, babe)
It won’t matter (it won’t matter, babe)
It won’t matter (ya)
It was like I was never there
(It was like I was never there)
It was like it was more than thin air, oh
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time, oh baby
It won’t matter, it won’t matter, baby
[Post-Chorus]
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter, it won’t matter
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter, it won’t matter
It was like I was never there
It was like it was more than thin air
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter, it won’t matter
[Interlude]
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter, it won’t matter
When it’s time, when it’s time, when it’s time
It won’t matter, it won’t matter
[Bridge]
Ooh, when no one know what love is
And I know it ain’t you for sure
You’d rather something toxic
So, I poison myself again, again
‘Til I feel nothing
In my soul (in my soul)
I’m on the edge of something breaking
I feel my mind is slowly fadin’
If I keep going, I won’t make it
If I keep going, I won’t make it
[Outro]
And it’s all because of you
It’s all because of you
It’s all because of you
It’s all because of you
Woah, woah
Don’t you, baby, hey
It won’t matter, baby
Don’t you know?

I don’t wanna wake up
I don’t wanna wake up
I don’t wanna wake up
If you ain’t layin’ next to me-e-e
On me, me, on me, oh, I
On me, on me, on me (Who you gettin’ sprung for now?)
And what they got that I ain’t got? Who you pullin’ up on? Who you give that love to now? [Verse 1]
Wasted times I spent with someone else
She wasn’t even half of you
Reminiscin’ how you felt
Reminiscin’ how you felt
And even though you put my life through hell
I can’t seem to forget ’bout you, ’bout you
I want you to myself
[Chorus]
And now I’m askin’, who do you belong to now? Who you gettin’ sprung for now? And what they got that I ain’t got? ‘Cause I got a lot
Don’t make me run up on ’em, got me blowin’ up their spot
‘Cause I ain’t got no business catchin’ feelings anyway
I ain’t got no business catchin’ feelings
[Verse 2]
Catchin’ feelings
These girls only want you when you’re winnin’ (winnin’)
But, you’ve been with me from the beginnin’ (ooh, yeah, yeah)
And I know right now that we’re not talkin’ (not talkin’)
I hope you know this dick is still an option
‘Cause I’ll beat it up (I’ll beat it up, yeah)
I’ll take my time to learn the way your body functions
You were equestrian, so ride it like a champion (I’ll beat it)
This sex will get you high without no other substance
[Chorus]
So who do you belong to now? (Who you give that love to now?)
Who you pullin’ up on? Who you gettin’ sprung for now? (Who do you belong to now?)
Who you give that love to now?

The Weeknd – Hurt You lyrics

[Verse 1]
And now I know relationship’s my enemy
So stay away from me
I’m warning you
You try to fill the void with every man you meet
‘Cause you’re upset with me
I’m warning you
[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause all the nights you slept alone dryin’ your eyes
And all the nights you thought about takin’ your life
‘Cause if it’s love you want again, don’t waste your time
But if you call me up, I’m f*ckin’ you on sight
[Chorus]
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
[Verse 2]
When you’re with him, you close your eyes and think of me
Just call me up again
I’ll make you weak
Girl, I’ll come to put myself between your lips
Not between your heart
Can’t you see? [Pre-Chorus]
That all the nights we slept alone, dryin’ your eyes (’cause of me, baby)
And all the nights you thought about takin’ your life (’cause of me, baby)
‘Cause if it’s love you want again, don’t waste your time (don’t you waste)
If you call me up, I’m f*ckin’ you on sight
[Chorus]
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
I don’t wanna hurt you
[Outro]
I don’t want
I don’t want
I don’t want
I don’t want
I don’t wanna, baby
I don’t wanna, baby
I don’t

The Weeknd – Try Me lyrics

[Intro]
Any time is the time
Any time for you to get my call, baby (so, baby)
Are you alone, baby? (try me), try me (try me)
Once you put your pride aside (once you put your pride aside)
You can notify me (fy me), -fy me (fy me)
You’re the best I ever had (you’re the best I ever had)
Baby girl, remind me (mind me), -mind me (mind me)
Let me know if it’s on (let me know)
And you know where to find me, find me
Havin’ thoughts you never had, yeah
Can you try me? Babe, he ain’t around, pick up your phone, baby
Whoa
[Chorus]
Can you try me? Try me, try me
Once you put your pride aside
You can notify me, -fy me
You’re the best I ever had
Baby girl, remind me, -mind me
Lemme know if it’s on (let me know, baby)
And you know where to find me (find me), find me (find me) Having thoughts you never had, yeah
[Bridge]
Oh, lo
Lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo
Lo-lo-lo-lo-lo, lo-lo-lo
Lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo
Better try me
[Outro]
Don’t you mess with me
Don’t you mess with me
The way I kissed your scars
The way I fixed your heart
Don’t you mess with me, babe
Don’t you mess with me (try me), try me (try me)
Once you put your pride aside
You can notify me (fy me), -fy me (fy me)
You’re the best I ever had
Baby girl, remind me (mind me), -mind me (mind me)
Lemme know if it’s on
And you know where to find me, find me
Having thoughts you never had, yeah
[Verse 1]
I didn’t know you were down for finding out
I thought you had some kind of love for your man
Well, I’m not tryna break up something
You’ve been workin’ out, you’ve been steady
But I’m ready to go all the way if you let me
Don’t you tempt me
[Verse 2]
You’re lookin’ grown since the last time I looked at you
It might have been, been about a couple months
But I just got the picture that you texted to me
You ain’t steady, you look ready to go all the way
If you let me take you down on me
[Chorus]
Can you try me?
