Ms Smith’s husband Chris said it had restored his faith in human nature.”I’m a little bit overwhelmed by the generosity of people, It brings back the good things in life rather than all the bad things,” he said. But he could not help bringing up Australia’s recent cricketing shame.”It’s not true what people say about you Australians,” he joked. He said Australians had a reputation for being “very arrogant, very cocksure of themselves if that is a phrase I could use, and just very brash”.But Mr Smith said that was not what he had experienced on the Gold Coast. He said he hoped former Australian captain Steve Smith could redeem himself once his ban for ball tampering ended. Obstetrician Genevieve Bishop heard the family’s story and called to offer four tickets.”The generosity is just amazing. For someone who we don’t know at all to give us these tickets, we are really very, very excited,” Ms Smith said. The family has since bought two tickets that were being sold online and had another ticket donated to them.”We’re up to seven and number eight is a tiny one so he doesn’t need a ticket, so we’re all in,” Ms Smith said. Genevieve Bishop has given tickets to the Commonwealth Games hockey to Chris and Priscilla Smith so they can watch their son, after their own tickets fell through. Two weeks after Australia was caught cheating in a cricket Test match, a Gold Coast doctor has done her bit to make it up to a South African family at the Commonwealth Games.South African mum Priscilla Smith was devastated when she was told tickets her family had been promised by the South African Hockey Association to watch her son play hockey in the Games on the Gold Coast were no longer available.”We were so downhearted when we realised we wouldn’t be able to watch Austin play, and we had come all this way,” she said. But Ms Smith was determined to see her son in action, so she contacted ABC Radio on the Gold Coast to see if any listeners could help.
